Hill College Board of Regents holds April 2023 monthly meeting

On April 18, 2023, the Hill College Board of Regents met for the monthly regular session meeting.
The minutes from the February meeting were approved; the board did not meet in March. The financial report was also presented and approved.
Hill College President Dr. Thomas Mills presented his report, including several student events, the new Hill College flag off Interstate 35, enrollment numbers, wrapping up financial fitness month, and the annual Boots & Suits event.
His report also included updates on the Texas Commission on Community College Finance legislation. The bill was passed by the House and is going to the Senate for a final vote.
In other news, the college held the Leadership Cleburne Tour at the Johnson County Campus and Cleburne Technical Center on March 8.
The second annual Hill County Summit was held on April 5. This is a joint event between Go Hillsboro! and Hill College. The guest speaker was Texas State Comptroller Glenn Hegar. Go Hillsboro! and Hill College also hosted the Hill County High School Senior Career Fair on March 22. Both events were well attended.
The student government association attended the state conference in Dallas April 13 through 16, along with the Dean of Students Adrian Riojas and Director of Student Life Kelly Tweeten.
On May 1, the college will host a Medal of Honor Memorial Brick Ceremony at the Texas Heritage Museum on the Hill County Campus in recognition of the service of Congressman Jake Ellzey, Senator Brian Birdwell, Mr. William Galiga, and Mrs. Yvonne Mills. The event will include the brick presentation, a museum tour, and luncheon. All proceeds will go to maintenance for the memorial.
Commencement will be held next month on May 11 at 7 p.m. at the Cleburne Conference Center.
Foundation and Century Club projects were approved, including a new digital score table and a topographic survey for the soccer field. Personnel changes were also approved.
Updates on the continuation of campus maintenance were presented, including the completion of the roofing replacement at Dudley and Frazier Halls, Loftland demolition and asbestos abatement, and tree removal and pruning across the Hill County Campus. Upcoming projects were offered for approval, including repair of the walkways and railings at Bailey Hall, a proposed total of $148,970; demolition of electrical poles at the baseball fields, a proposed total of $2,270; and erosion and drainage repairs for the library, a proposed total of $19,625. The projects were approved.
Dean John Versluis presented an update on the accreditation of the Texas Heritage Museum. Members from the American Alliance of Museums visited the museum on March 27 and 28 and met with staff and students. The museum is expecting an update on the status of accreditation at the end of July.
Athletic Director Paul Brown presented the athletic report, including updates on men's and women’s basketball, softball, baseball, track, and rodeo. Thirty-two athletes from the athletic program received academic honors. The college hosted the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association Southern region rodeo at the end of March, the event was part of a four-circuit tour for the Southern region championship.
Several considerations for approval of fees were presented, including prior learning fees and approval of ASCAP (licensing for music usage at events, social media, etc.). Other approvals were presented for education clinicals for both the Burleson and Joshua ISDs, the Hill College drug and alcohol abuse program’s partnership with the Clearfork Academy, and a consideration of approval for a Memorandum of Understanding with Venus ISD for dual credit learning. They were also approved.
